Microdermabrasion is a very popular exfoliation treatment for all skin types because it is quick, safe, painless, and effective with no downtime. It is achieved by the use of inert aluminum oxide mineral micro-crystals or a diamond tip wand to remove dead or damaged skin cells leaving skin softer, smoother, brighter, clearer, and younger looking. Microdermabrasion is also helpful for whiteheads, black-heads and acne-prone skin as it aids the removal of debris that can lead to clogged pores and acne. For smooth skin, a little microdermabrasion goes a long way. Regular microdermabrasion sessions keep the skin clear and fresh and active skin products will penetrate better following microdermabrasion. At RejuvaDERM, we use the ClearFx Microdermabrasion machine which is a medical-grade system for professional use in Dermatologist offices and medical spas. It was recently demonstrated on The Doctor’s Television Program this past year.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Approximately every 28 days we create a new layer of skin. As new cells form, they push their way to the surface and then dead cells settle on the surface. This can cause enlarged pores, clogged pores, uneven texture, and a dull appearance. As we age this process slows down leading to the appearance of older skin with less radiance. With microdermabrasion, the mineral crystals/diamond tip with gentle vacuum exfoliates approximately 20-25 microns of dead skin cells of the outermost skin layer.
Once removed, it reveals one’s own fresher, younger looking skin beneath.

Who Can Benefit From Microdermabrasion? What Areas Can Be Treated?
Men and women of any skin type or color. Anyone with aging, dry, devitalized, blemished, dull and sun damaged skin. It is also popular to remove the rough skin of keratosis pilaris found on the upper arms and shoulders. The most common areas treated include the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back, hands, knees, and elbows, but any body site can be treated.

How Long Does The Treatment Take?
Microdermabrasion treatment usually takes 15-30 minutes depending upon the body area.

How Many Treatments are Usually Needed?
This treatment is meant to be progressive not aggressive. Usually treatments are performed every 2 weeks for a series of 6. Maintenance treatments are suggested once every 4-6 weeks. Generally results are more noticeable after the 3rd treatment, although even after the first session, the skin will appear fresher, cleaner, smoother, and softer for many patients.

What Should I Do Before and After Treatment?
Stop your retin-A products or any skin care products that irritate the skin for at least 2-3 days before treatment and do not restart until 2-3 days after. Protect your skin with a good quality sunscreen after treatment.
